When developing the right cleaning and disinfection regime for your GMP cleanroom, there are many choices and options. Here our Account Manager, Kirsty, explains some key rules for creating an effective regime.

First, it’s important to distinguish between cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning is the removal of non-viable contamination or residues from a surface. Whereas disinfection is the destruction of microorganisms or viable contamination, which in GMP cleanrooms is achieved using biocides. For your disinfection to be effective, you must first clean to remove any surface contamination and disinfectant residue.

Always ensure that the specified contact time is used for each disinfectant.

If you are validating a new regime, make sure all the products are BPR compliant.

You must also consider the suitability of the product you are using, to be sure it is appropriate for the area:

• Disinfectants and detergents used in Grade A zone and Grade B areas should be sterile prior to use.
• Disinfectants used in Grade C and D may also be required to be sterile. This should be based on your risk assessment.
